Welcome to a Super-Short Mega Story writing challenge. Your challenge is to use the photo to inspire a 150-200 word super-short story – a proper one, with beginning, middle, end and punchline (all super-short stories gotta have a punchline) – and post it on your blog, with the prompt photo and a link back to this blog for others to pick up and join in the fun.

If it all works and everybody has a lot of fun – which is what all this is about – I’ll keep the contest going. Let me know what you write!
We kick off with a picture I took of Lake Dunstan – an artificial hydro lake in Otago, New Zealand, formed in the early 1990s. But your story can be about anything…can’t it. Are you ready? Set…
Go!

Here’s my entry:
Looking out across the serene blue water and feeling a quiet contentment, I walked along the mossy green hilltop looking for a place to lay out my blanket. A stunning ancient shade tree beckoned me. Perfect.
Enjoying the peaceful beauty undisturbed by nothing more than a light breeze ruffling through my hair and the call of the birds flying high in the sky, I grabbed the coffee thermos and hefty roast beef sandwich from my backpack.
As I pulled out my laptop I heard rustling behind me. Not bothering to turn around, “Rachel, if you’re trying to sneak up on me you’re doing a lousy job. I can hear you.”
I unwrapped my sandwich. “Hurry up. I’m hungry.” Still not paying any attention to the noise, I chewed greedily, focused on the beauty. “I’d love to build a house here and have this view everyday.”
A loud grunt followed by a hot exhalation on the top of my head. Fear ran through me as I tried to say, “Rachel?”
Another grunt, sounding like ‘No’.
Fearfully, I turned.
A huge brown bear was reaching for my sandwich.
