The term “work gang” is sort of old fashioned now, isn’t it? So “ganger” might be a good word for someone who belongs to a criminal gang, as these are still around. “Gang member” sounds too genteel.

True! The media here in NZ always refers to ‘gang members’, inevitably in context of some crime or other which certainly couldn’t be considered genteel.
