
This week’s obscure English word is ucalegon. It means a neighbour whose house has burned down or is on fire. The word is an eponym from ancient Greek, and refers to Ucalegon, an inhabitant of Troy whose house suffered this fate.

I figured it had something to do with fire. Didn’t Tolkien name a dragon something like that?

Yes. Angcalon the Black. Maybe Tolkien was influenced? He was a philologist after all

That was the one! I’m sure he was influenced. I’m also thinking of “calcination,” a stage in alchemy that involves burning.
